Beyond the Arno, a bohemian neighborhood

Arts and crafts markets, artisans’ shops, and artists' studios are open during the day, making this piazza typically bohemian while its many restaurants and bars make it an ideal place for an aperitivo or dinner. The square was built to welcome the faithful who gathered in front of what is now the Basilica di Santo Spirito, one of the last works by the architect Brunelleschi, inside which is preserved the wooden crucifix by Michelangelo. In the center of the piazza is an octagonal fountain and in front of the Basilica there is a monument dedicated to Cosimo Ridolfi, an illustrious agriculturalist who founded the Accademia dei Georgofili. On the pizza you will also spot houses belonging to the Florentine aristocracy, including Palazzo Guadagni, which dates back to the 1500s and features a typical loggia on the upper floor. On the other side of the Arno, "Oltrarno", as the Florentines say, you’ll find a neighborhood bursting with life to discover.
